Infant CPR & First Aid Guide: Step-by-Step Emergency Response

Infant Emergency First Aid: CPR & Airway Management

1. Danger – Ensure Safety First

  • Assess the area for hazards to protect yourself, the infant, and others.

2. Check for Response

  • Gently tap and call the infant’s name.

  • No response? Immediately call Triple Zero (000) or instruct someone to call.

  • If responsive: Keep the infant comfortable and monitor for injuries.

3. Airway Check & Clearing Blockages

  • Open the mouth and check for choking hazards:

    • No blockage? Keep the infant in the neutral head position (slightly tilted).

    • Blockage present?

      • Place the infant face down on your forearm, head slightly lowered.

      • Use your little finger to sweep out the obstruction.

      • Recheck the airway and maintain a neutral head position.

4. Check for Breathing (10 Seconds)

  • Look for chest/abdominal movement.

  • Listen & feel for air from the nose/mouth.

    • Not breathing normally? Start infant CPR immediately.

    • Breathing normally? Hold in the recovery position (face down on forearm) and monitor.

5. Infant CPR (30:2 Ratio)

  • Position: Lay the infant on a firm surface, head in neutral alignment.

  • Compressions:

    • Use two fingers (index & middle) on the lower half of the breastbone.

    • Press ⅓ of chest depth (about 4 cm).

    • Rate: 100–120 compressions per minute.

  • Rescue Breaths:

    • Cover the infant’s mouth and nose with your mouth.

    • Blow gently for 1 second—just enough to make the chest rise.

  • Continue CPR (30 compressions : 2 breaths) until help arrives or the infant recovers.

6. Defibrillation (AED for Infants)

  • Do NOT use an AED on infants under 12 months unless directed by Triple Zero (000) operator.
